The current study was performed to evaluate the protective effects of astaxanthin against diazinon exposure on the gill biochemical and gene expression indices in rainbow trout. Fish were fed with different doses (0.5, 2 and 5 g kg-1) commercial astaxanthin for 60 days. After the feeding trial, fish were challenged with 0.11 mg L-1 diazinon for 96 hours. After the in vivo test, fish gills were sampled to study the biochemical factors and antioxidant-relevant gene expressions. Results showed that feeding astaxanthin could decrease lipid peroxidation products and improve gill antioxidant status. Meanwhile, mRNA expression levels related to some antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferase, glutathione peroxidase and nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf2), were up-regulated in the fish fed astaxanthin following the challenge with diazinon. Even though no significant changes in catalase mRNA expression level was observed. Present study suggests that astaxanthin could mitigate the oxidative stress induced by diazinon in rainbow trout gill.
