The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of antioxidants, such as vitamin C and chitosan on oxidative stress markers in gills of fish are exposed to paraquat. In the study, fish were fed enriched diet with chitosan (100 mg. Kg-1 feed), Vitamin C (100 mg. Kg-1 feed) and vitamin C combined with chitosan and simultaneously were exposed to 0.02 mg. L-1 paraquat for 21 days. At the end experiment period, oxidative stress biomarkers such as catalase activity, total antioxidant and malondialdehyde as well as cellular biochemical parameters including aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase activities were measured. The aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase and catalase activities as well as malondialdehyde levels significantly increased in gill cells of fish exposed to paraquat. While the cellular total antioxidant levels significantly decreased in gill cells of fish exposed to paraquat. Although administration of vitamin C and chitosan to fish exposed to paraquat caused a significant decrease in the lactate dehydrogenase and catalase activities and the malondialdehyde levels in the gill cells, these levels also significantly higher than the control group. Administration of vitamin C and chitosan did not have significant effect on the aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase activities, and the cellular total antioxidant. In conclusion, due to the high levels of oxygen in gills of fish, paraquat toxicity may be severe. Results in this study show that administration of natural antioxidant such as vitamin C and chitosan have a minor effect on the biochemical parameters of gill cells, but it has not turned these parameters into normal levels.
