High capital investment is one of disadvantages of current recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) that restricted adoption and application of them. Biofilters are very important and expensive components of RAS, as proper selection of them are critical to both the technical and economical success of a RAS. Hence In this research application and activation of four types of biofilter media (barley straw, wood chips, sponge and PVC pore pipes) in the common carp recirculating aquaculture system were studied. 12 pilot recirculating aquaculture systems constructed to conduct this research. Each system consisted from a polyethylene tank (90 L) for rearing of fingerlings and a black polyethylene tank (45 L) as a biofilter reactor. Stocking density of common carp fingerlings (mean weight: 4.8 g) in the each tank was 50 individuals. Results showed that TAN and NO2-N concentrations increased initially and then decreased during activation period. Nitrate nitrogen increased during the activation period of biofilters. All biofilters reached steady state conditions and activated completely at days 28-31, while PVC biofilter had relatively high concentration of NO2-N even at day 31. Growth and feeding parameters showed no significant differences between treatments, but there was significant difference between flow throw system and treatment PVC (p<0.05). In conclusion barley straw, wood chip and sponge biofilters were well activated under common carp recirculating aquaculture systems.

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of horse mint hydroalcoholic extract on blood biochemical factors and growth performance in common carp. In this research, 144 juveniles carp (mean weight 87.85±10.75 gr) were fed with commercial food enriched with horse mint hydro alcoholic extract at 0.0 (control), 0.1, 0.5 and 1 percent (per kg feed) for 45 days. After 15, 30 and 45 days of the experiment, 9 fish were caught and blood samples were taken from their caudal vein by a heparinized syringe. A significant increase was observed in glucose, ALT and ALP activity in fish treated with 0.5 and 1% of horse mint extract on day 45 (P<0.05). AST and LDH activity, cholesterol and albumin levels significantly increased in fish fed with 1% horse mint extract on day 30 and 45. Also, a significant increase was observed in triglyceride and creatinine in fish treated by extract 1% on day 30, but globulin level significantly decreased in fish treated by extract 1% on day 45 (P>0.05). Based on the results CPK only increased in fish treated by 1% of mint extract on day 15. Administration of 0.5 and 1 percent of mint extract reduced the specific growth rate, gained weight and final weight on day 30 and 45. Feed conversion ratio significantly increased on day 30 and 45. However, administration of mint extract did not have any effect on condition factor. The results of the pre-clinical study to evaluate the influence of mint extract (at concentrations of more than 5 gr) on common carp indicated that cell toxicity could be due to the administration of M. longifolia on blood biochemical indices and growth performance.

In out of the propagation time, the sex cells preparation is so difficult. Thus, the cryopreservation is helped to better investigations and propagation program management quality. In this study, 11 male of Caspian trout (Salmo truta caspius) (with mean length and weight 37/8 ± 5/3 cm and 523/3 ± 24/7 respectively) and 23 male of Caspian kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum) (with mean length and weight 36/1 ± 7/1 cm and 631/3 ± 21/6 g respectively) were evaluated. All the fish were good at the initial examination of sexual maturity. After sperm sampling, their quality were tested. In this step, the parameters such as motility, duration of mobility, density, pH and osmolality were measured. After this stage, the sperm samples of Caspian trout in the ratio 1: 3 were diluted with the aqueous solution containing compounds (0.3M Glucose, 10% Methanol, 10% egg yolk) and the freezing process was done manually and the sperm was frozen in liquid nitrogen. The sperm samples of Caspian kutums were diluted (ratio of 1: 3) with two soluble diluent containing compounds (350 mM glucose, 30 mM Tris and 4% Polyethylene glycol) and (350 mM glucose, 30 mM Tris and 2% Glycerol) and were frozen automatically by Planner Kryo instrument and placed in liquid nitrogen. The sperm samples were thawed 1 to 3 months after the date of the first freezing and their quality were assessed by measuring percent and timing motility. The results showed significant differences between fresh and frozen/thawed sperm of the Caspian trout regarding motility percent. There were not found a significant difference in duration of mobility between fresh and frozen/thawed sperm Caspian trout. The results showed a significantly decrease of the motility percent and mobility duration of Caspian kutum frozen/thawed sperm compared with fresh sperm. The results showed that the sample of Caspian kutum sperm that were diluted by ethylene glycol after thawing and were immotile of them. However, the samples were diluted by glycerol, after thawing, were alive and motile. According to the results, it seems very important species differences that must be fully considered in the process of freezing sperm.

Breeding and cultivation of native Chironomid (Chironomus albidus) midges of the Guilan Province were carried out to produce larvae in rearing system and to be also used for feeding fish larvae and fingerlings. In this study, 4 metal trays (65×65×10 cm) and 6 plastic basins with the capacity of 35 L were designed and built. Trays and basins were installed vertically and then equipped with aeration and water supply systems. In small part of the rearing site, a 2-liter fiberglass tanks was used for collection of egg clutches. After collection and introduction of egg clutches into the trays and plastic basins, the amount of harvested Chironomid larvae were calculated during a consecutive rearing period. A total of 0.978 kg/m2 larvae of Chironomid will be produced and harvested daily under rearing conditions. Results obtained from this study revealed that 382 g/m2chironomid larvae were harvested on the 15th day of rearing as a percentage of the first reared group and then a total of 2 kg/m2 larvae were obtained periodically from all the population of a group on the 16th day of rearing.

Perinereis nuntia is one of the best live foods for Penaeid shrimps broodstock in the world. In this study some biological characteristics of P. nuntia including: sex ratio, fecundity, fecundity-weight correlation and oocyte diameter were studied. Sampling was done monthly in one-year period from January 2012 to December 2013, at 3 stations in the coastal zone of Bandar Abbas. The results showed that the highest frequencies of males and females occurred in March, April and May due to the fact that this species is semelparous and population of adults sharply drops in June. Sex ratio of this species was 1:1. Minimum and maximum absolute fecundity were observed in a 642 mg specimen with 49006 eggs and a 1626 mg specimen with 393245 eggs, respectively; and mean fecundity of this species in the coastal waters of Bandar Abbas was 192344 ± 94716 eggs per each adult. The correlation between total fecundity and weight of 200 polychaete worms was calculated as y=255.42 x-74904 with 0.736 correlation coefficient. The maximum mean of oocyte diameter was 255 µm observed in the last stage of sexual maturation (stage 4). This species can be considered as a suitable species for propagation and culture due to high rate of fecundity.

Background and Objectives: white spot disease (WSD) in shrimps causes heavy losses in shrimp farming in the country. Various studies have reported different physical and chemical factors in water for WSD incidence. The purpose of this study was to determine the rate of studied risk factors in WSD incidence in shrimp culture farms in West Bahu Kalat (Southeastern Iran) by logistic regression model. Methods: Some factors in water such as: temperature, salinity, oxygen, pH, ammonia, silica, transparency and the amount of phytoplankton and some management factors from 12 pounds of shrimp culture farms located in Sistan and Baluchestan province during two years (2010 and 2011) were measured and recorded. 1180 cultured Litopenaeus vannamei from 12 pounds were tested for identification of the white spot virus (WSV) by Nested-PCR method. Results: The data analysis with software (PASW Statistics 18, SPSS) showed effects of oxygen, temperature and transparency factors in incidence of WSD in the studied area. Conclusion: Some risk factors were more importance than others and some risk factors had not affected the incidence of WSD in this study. It seems that WSD incidence related to some ecology of studied area and biologic of host factors are not measured in this study.

Regarding increasing demand of fish meal and growth of aquaculture in the world, occurrence of some climate events such as El Nino caused in oscillation of production, supply and price of fish meal in global market. Annually fish meal and fish oil are produced about 7 and 1 million tons respectively from 33 million tons of whole fish and fish waste in the world. Chile and Peru are the major producers of these products due to their abundant reservoirs of Anchovy are responsible of about 50 percent of the fish feed in the world. In 2008 Peru, Chile and Thailand were the main producers of fishmeal with producing 1.4 million tons, 800 and 470 thousand tons, respectively in the world. The most importation was belonged to China with 1.3 million tons and the most exportation was pertained to Peru with 1.6 million tons in 2008. Average global market price of fish meal was 1461/7 $ per ton in 2012. There are 47 fish meal factories in Iran and the maximum capacity production of them is 1200 ton/RM/day. Despite the problems in preparation of raw material for the production, for the reason decrease of fish meal imports and high demand for fish meal price of their products have escalated. Hence, high demand of fish meal and its effect on fish diet cost, has been caused to increase retailing of the fish up to 470 percentage. Furthermore the fish meal industry targeted planning and coordination of fishing and aquaculture programs is the need aquaculture development.

Study of the impacts of environmental factors on sperm properties of fishes needs understanding its structure. Since. There is no information is available about morphological structure of Caspian lamprey (Caspiomyzon wagneri). Hence, this study was conducted to survey the histo-morphology of testis and structure of the spermazoid in Caspian lamprey during spawning season. For histological examination, the testis of 15 Caspian lampreys were sampled during their migration to the Shirud River and then, the histological section of these samples were prepared based on paraffin method. For study of the morphological parameters of the spermatozoid, including the shape and length of spermatozoid; length, width and area of the head, length and width of the flagellum, ellipticity and elongation of the spermatozoid, they were studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) immediately after spermation and fixation in glutaraldehyde fixative solution. The results showed that the Caspian lamprey has a lobular testis enclosed by interstitial cells, fibroblasts, blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. During the sampling time (mid-May), fish testes were at stage V and full of the spermatozoa. SEM results showed that the sperm of this species compared to other lamprys is shorter and has a smaller head length with less elongation as well as flat anterior face of the acrosome.
